Eskleigh Home – Christmas Party

On Wednesday, we had a wonderful time celebrating our Eskleigh Foundation Christmas Party! Santa made a special appearance and handed out presents. We were thrilled to have the Year 6 students from Perth Primary School who have been volunteering with us weekly throughout the year for community service, join us for the festivities, free ice-creams and a delicious BBQ on offer that was simply sensational!

A heartfelt thank you to our amazing organizers: Tony, Rob, Erica, Miranda, Caitlin, Lisa, Kendra, Mandy, and Mathew, for making this celebration possible!

North East – Christmas Party

What a fantastic day we had for our Christmas party at Mini golf! The weather couldn’t have been better, setting the perfect scene for fun and friendly competition.

The day was a great mix of participants and staff from both Perth and the North West, creating a wonderful opportunity to catch up and connect. It’s always special to see everyone come together for events like this.

After navigating the twists and turns of the mini-golf course, I managed to take out the top spot, with Amanda putting in a stellar performance to claim second place. The friendly rivalry added a lot of laughs and excitement to the day.

Following the game, we all enjoyed a delicious lunch featuring fresh rolls, an assortment of pastries, and plenty of snacks to refuel after the competition.

Overall, it was an excellent turnout with everyone in high spirits. It’s safe to say fun was had by all, and the sunny weather was the cherry on top of a great celebration.

Thank you to everyone who joined in and made the day such a memorable one! Here's to many more gatherings like this in the future.

Before joining Eskleigh, I worked in the not-for-profit sector with another provider. My background includes HR consulting, executive recruitment, sales, and business development, focusing on improving staffing solutions for various businesses.

What I love most about working at Eskleigh is the opportunity to work together across the organisation to improve processes and drive positive change. I thrive on the energy that comes from identifying issues, consulting with others, and understanding the impacts of our decisions, especially regarding job security and the quality of support we provide to our clients.

My primary goal since joining has been to foster a strong organisational culture. We’re currently engaging in 5 conversations with staff to cultivate the right mindset for our strategic growth and diversity initiatives. We've already begun workshops across different regions, including the North West Coast and North with Hobart to follow in December, bringing together support workers and administrative staff to ensure comprehensive involvement. These sessions focus on our strategic direction and individual expectations from the organisation. We aim to identify shared values and understand how they translate into actions that reflect our desired culture. Our discussions will continue into next year, emphasising recognition of positive contributions and addressing behaviours that don’t align with our values.  

Outside of work, I cherish spending time with my family, whether it’s at home, on holidays, or simply enjoying day trips. We have been fortunate enough to travel to places like Greece, Italy, Paris, and the English countryside where I once lived.  This Christmas, we’ll gather at my home for traditional celebrations, starting Christmas Eve. Our family enjoys spending Boxing Day in pyjamas, playing with new gifts (a tradition from when my girls were small), and enjoying toasted ham sandwiches (there’s always so much ham to eat). Originally from Tasmania, I’ve lived in Hobart, Melbourne, Sydney, England, and had a brief stay in South Africa. I also enjoy Pilates, which helps me discover muscles I never knew I had!

I’m excited about the journey ahead at Eskleigh and the positive changes we’re making together!

 

Dancing in Hobart

Recently, Lisa expressed an interest in trying out a different activity. We suggested the monthly Karaoke Idol Dance—through Aurora Disability Services. This program charges a $10 participation fee, but it offers a wonderful opportunity to engage with the community, enjoy music and dancing, and share some food as well.

It’s a fantastic initiative that Lisa absolutely loved and will attend again in December.

Longford Renovations

The laundry at Longford has been given a fresh update. Gone is the old washer that was a bit hard to get clothing out of!! Now there is a new washer, dryer and the whole laundry has been updated.

 
 

In celebration of the official opening of the new laundry at Longford, the Longford residents and support workers invited the maintenance team and Ros to a delightful morning tea.

Christmas BBQ sausage making

Get ready to roll out the grill as there was some serious sausage making magic happening at Eskleigh Home. Patrick, one of our resident’s, together with support workers Tess, Kendra, Dipip, Nabin, Andrew, Jodie teamed up to tackle the whopping 10 kilos of pork and lamb from Swift Meats.  With all the finesse of gourmet chefs, they squeezed the meat into the sausage castings like pros. These tasty sausages will be sizzling at our Family Christmas BBQ on18 December. So mark your calendars, bring your appetite, and get ready for some deliciously good times.

Inspiring journey from Nigeria to Tasmania – Blessing Ojo

Featured in the Launceston Examiner is our wonderful support worker Blessing Ojo, who graced the front page, sharing her inspiring journey from Nigeria to Tasmania.  Blessing has always been passionate about caring for others, a value deeply rooted in her culture. Her transformative experience came when she suffered a serious accident which ignited her desire to pursue nursing. Currently enrolled in nursing at TAFE she was recently honoured with the prestigious 2024 Ueno Award, recognising her commitment to her studies and community engagement. Blessing’s future is bright, and we are so proud to have her as a part of our team, embodying the spirit of compassion and dedication.

We’re making great progress, and we can’t wait to see these units come to life!

The exterior work in progressing well. The switchboard and water meter pads have been installed and are set for finalisation next week. Both driveways are marked out and ready for concrete. The carports for all units, except unit 4, have been prepared for concrete installation. Additionally, the external cladding is complete for all units, except for unit 4. Things are shaping up nicely. 

Last week we had the pleasure of welcoming participants, families and support coordinators for a special tour of unit 1. The feedback we received was overwhelmingly positive, and everyone is eager to see the next steps unfold. It was wonderful to witness such enthusiasm as we work towards creating a supportive and welcoming environment.

Unit 1: Final touches are being added with plumbing and electrical fixtures nearly complete; only assistive technology installation remains. Painting is almost finished. 

Unit 2: Plumbing fixture installation will begin next week, while electrical work is already in progress. Vinyl flooring and joinery are complete. 

Unit 3: Plumbing and electrical fixtures are done, and painting has begun. 

Unit 4: Plastering and initial painting are complete, vinyl flooring is laid, and joinery installation is underway. 

Unit 5: Plumbing and electrical fixtures are 80% complete, with painting started and vinyl flooring laid. 

Unit 6: Plumbing and electrical fixtures are complete, joinery is done, and vinyl flooring is laid. Plumbing fixtures installation will start next week. 

Unit 7: Vinyl flooring is complete, electrical work is 80% done, plumbing installation will begin next week, and joinery and fixtures are complete. 

Join us for Eskleigh’s Family Christmas Party

Get ready to jingle all the way – Eskleigh Home is hosting its Annual Family Christmas Party on 18 December. The festivities will kick off at 11am with a Christmas tree decoration making session and with DJ Skip providing some Christmas music. At noon, we’ll gather for lunch to fill our bellies with homemade delicious sausages and Nepalese chicken momos and burgers.  (see post below (link to sausage making)) And of course no party is complete without a visit from Santa, who will be spreading joy and handing out presents from 1.00pm-1.30pm. Our exciting raffle (Link to article on raffle) will be drawn from 1.30pm-2.00pm. 

Come celebrate the magic of the season with us – it’s going to be a holly, jolly good time.

I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself and share a bit about my journey with you. I joined the board in 2019 and took on the role of chair in 2022. My professional background is in engineering operations, and I’m currently the Engineering Operations Manager at Melbourne Airport. My experience includes managing complex asset bases, developing strategic specifications, and leading teams in a dynamic environment. However, I get more fulfilment helping people from all walks of life where I can.

For seven years, I volunteered as a councillor and independent prisons visitor at Corrections Victoria, primarily at Barwon Prison, a maximum security facility. This experience reinforced my commitment to making a positive difference in people's lives, which is why when I saw the advertisement for the Eskleigh board, I felt compelled to learn more. Coming from Victoria, I knew nothing about Eskleigh at first, but becoming part of this community has been one of the best decisions I've ever made. I have been made extremely welcome. I am constantly inspired by the dedication of our staff and the extraordinary care they provide to every person we support. It is a privilege to work alongside such passionate and committed people who truly embody the spirit of care and compassion. Eskleigh continues to hold a special place in Tasmania as a sanctuary of peace and hope. 

So much has happened in my fairly short time here.

The potential we have as an organisation is immense, and I am genuinely excited for what the future holds. Together, we can continue to build on the strong foundation already in place and explore new opportunities to enhance the lives of the people we support.

Thank you for welcoming me into this wonderful community. It is an honour to be your Chair, and I look forward to working together to make Eskleigh even more remarkable.

Eskleigh Foundation is excited to host our first Eskleigh Home Car Show Fundraiser on Sunday October 10, 10am – 2pm and proudly supported by WayFM.

Set against the backdrop of Eskleigh’s beautiful garden surrounds, you can explore a range of classic Pre-80’s cars from enthusiastic collectors. We will also have one of our own car lovers, Leigh Warren showcasing his 1964 EH Holden Station Wagon along with a variety of stalls including Food trucks, Kerbside Chippys, the Original Stiffies Café and The Devil’s Own Ice Creamery.

Entry is by gold coin donation so come and enjoy the cars, some food and sun and support Eskleigh Foundation!

Ship Ahoy! Clients at Eskleigh have had the opportunity to experience sailing in and around the Tamar River thanks to Sailability Tasmania.

Sailability is a voluntary non-profit organisation that aims to provide a safe and friendly environment where people of all abilities are accepted and encouraged to participate in the sport of sailing.

Sailing is just one of the many activities you could participate in as part of Eskleigh’s Community Access program and supported by our qualified, caring professionals.

Eskleigh celebrates National Pyjama Day

Clients and Support Team members at Eskleigh celebrated national Pyjama Day last week.

Fun was had by all that got dressed up (or down) for this charity fundraising day and to support the Pyjama Foundation and their ‘Love of Learning Program’ which is offered to children in foster care.

Donations were collected by our wonderful clients, Wendy and Katrina who did a fantastic job, with all donations going toward providing children their very own special Pyjama Angel mentor who empowers them with learning, life skills and confidence to change the direction of their life.

We also took the opportunity to enjoy some well-earned Pampering!

What a wonderful outing and day to make some memories.

Our footy mad residents and staff recently attended the Hawthorn vs Essendon match on Sunday 20th June
at UTAS stadium.

Accessing the community once again, our Hawks and Bombers fans Katrina, David, Steven, Lawrence, Peter and Patrick rugged up in their footy gear and were treated to a heart stopping game.

The bombers took out the win leaving Patrick one happy man with the final scores - Hawks 73 Essendon 86.

A very big thanks as always to our awesome support crew Caitlin, Jodie, Andrew, Talinah and Robbie in assisting our clients to live their best life.

New vehicles join our fleet

Eskleigh is the proud owner of two brand new all accessible vans that will join our fleet of accessible vehicles, ensuring our clients can access a range of support services safely, comfortably and conveniently.

A special thank you to the Bruce Wall Charitable Trust for their generous donation of one of the new vehicles. It is the generosity of individuals, organisations and foundations such as this that enables Eskleigh to continue its important work in the community enabling people with disability to live independent and fulfilling lives.

Eskleigh services can be funded through the NDIS, MAIB or privately and we can provide support for children and adults across a broad range of abilities.
